Jettoo & Newman: NuroSTREAM is an education tech company that aims to enhance high school and college students’ learning curve by streamlining educational content, easing access to efficient learning tools, and captivating minds. Issues in the education system such as limited one-on-one interaction, impersonal material, and lack of perspective cause students to fall behind. We address these issues by using brain-targeted techniques and innovative learning models.

DC: Tell us about your startup. What problem are you solving and for whom?

Stetsyuk: The Virtual Reality Industry has disappointed many so far with content offerings that are below the standards set by the games industry. Content for VR games lacks the quality and depth players are used to in console and PC video games. VR is also a more difficult platform to develop high quality graphics, so there are also very few games with the same visual quality players are used to. Finally, VR has the issue of causing varying levels of discomfort in more intense experiences. Given that VR has the potential to revolutionize the entire entertainment industry, MPLEX is focused on solving these problems and unleashing that potential.

DC: Tell us about your startup. What problem are you solving and for whom?

Kamara: Iced Out Cosmetics was created to make the groups most ostracized and made to seem less attractive by society feel beautiful and like they have a place in the beauty industry. As a first generation African woman who has been bullied most of her life for having dark skin, I decided to make it my purpose to create a brand for dark skinned people of color to prove to them that they are beautiful—that beauty is not just skin deep but also a mentality that everyone can achieve with confidence. The uniqueness of this brand is that my target demographic does not start and end with only black women. Many brands make the mistake of leaving out the LGBTQIA+, they are often overlooked by brands and have no real representation in the beauty industry. My brand will be a brand that celebrates dark skin beauty and the difference that adds to our beauty as more than an aesthetic.

Hangry is a fast-casual food delivery service that is operated via drones. The traditional car and driver method has three major issues: high prices (delivery fee, service fee, surge fee — sometimes, and tip), long wait times, and more often than not driver errors will arise. These three major pain points for customers make delivery an unpleasant experience, especially when people are paying high fees. We have proved that by using drones we are able to provide a food delivery service that not only gives customers an exciting experience, but entirely eliminates these three major pain points.

DC: Tell us about your startup. What problem are you solving and for whom?

Savransky: Over the past two years we’ve been developing ENLY, an app that allows shoppers to try on and purchase designer clothing in a virtual marketplace. You take a selfie, input a few basic measurements, and we render a 3D avatar with your face and body! Then you shop like you would on any other website, but when you see something you like – try it on, ask your friends about it, get in touch with designers. We’re doing this because we want to give shoppers a virtual “in-store” experience. By enhancing the connection between online shoppers, designers, and clothes we’re going to reduce returns and the waste that comes with return shipping. In an industry where ecommerce return rates are as high as 50%, we believe that letting shoppers see their style and fit before ordering will substantially reduce the costs to shoppers, designers, and the environment.

De Padua: Current schools teach little to none of the skills that are key to the future generation, such as financial literacy, entrepreneurship and coding. The latter is by far the one that is having the biggest growth and demand.

Code&Play provides online coding classes taught live by real engineers. While providing the sought-after personalized and “face-to-face” learning experience from real instructors, all the classes take place remotely, providing convenience and worldwide accessibility to our service. This allows us to scale and reach students in many parts of the country and the world.

DC: Tell us about your startup. What problem are you solving and for whom?

Perpall: Although glass containers can be recycled endlessly, without losing strength or purity, they are the number one contaminators of recycled paper, plastic and aluminum. Removing post-consumer glass from the recycling stream helps other items retain their post-market value, and lowers the contamination level in county Material Recovery Facilities.

Our solution is to divert post-consumer glass away from the landfill and towards alternative end-markets that include glass artists, construction companies, & homeowners. Our most notable glass diversion operation is our Bottle Throwing Trailer. We built an outdoor, mobile unit that allows people (18+) to break glass containers by throwing them against a ‘break wall’ inside the trailer. We provide break games, music and LED lights to enhance the break experience. All of the glass broken at the Bottle Throwing trailer is barreled up and repurposed for use in the construction industry or by local glass artists.

DC: Tell us about your startup. What problem are you solving and for whom?

Edet: Blessed Braids is a hair-braiding company that provides quality braided hairstyles primarily for women. We also provide braid training for women and men who want to know how to braid for their own personal use, stylists who want to add braiding to their service offerings, and those who want to build their own hair-braiding business. My brand is unique because it intersects fashion with hair health and convenience. For women with tighter hair textures, it can be a hassle to provide the necessary care for their hair, so my styles provide them with a healthier, long-lasting alternative to applying a chemical straightener. My styles are equally as great for those who just want to add some flavor to their look and stay up to date with the latest braid and fashion trends.
